The German Museum of Technology covers more than 28,500 square meters. Its emphasis is on the transformation of technology and its significance for cultural development. It is one of the most popular museums in the city and provides great family entertainment.

Hot air balloons, steam locomotives, computers, ocean-going ships, printing presses and more: visitors to the Deutsches Technikmuseum (German Museum of Technology) can immerse themselves in the cultural history of technology. Fourteen departments invite you to take a closer look at technical developments in Germany and around the world.

Electrical engineering, telecommunications and more

Visitors can expect interesting facts about the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, energy technology, film technology, photographic technology, historical breweries, municipal transport, aerospace, communications technology, paper technology, production technology, computing and automation technology, rail transport, shipping, writing and printing technology, road transport and textile technology.

Highlights at the German Museum of Technology

The dream of flying lies dormant in many people. At the "From Balloon to Bridge" exhibition, visitors can find out how mankind has approached this dream. Numerous historical exhibits illustrate the development of aviation and space travel. Another highlight is the historic engine shed, where 40 original rail vehicles can be viewed.

LED walkway in the German Museum of Technology

On the over 1500 meter long LED walkway, visitors can experience various lighting concepts and find out for themselves how light affects perception. Different color temperatures, concepts and techniques illustrate the role of lighting quality and management. Innovative and sustainable solutions are also presented.

Science Centers Spectrum

Visitors of all ages are invited to experiment in the permanent exhibition at the Spectrum Science Center. Physical phenomena are explained in a playful and interactive way at over 150 stations.

Exhibits from the Sugar Museum now in the Museum of Technology

The exhibition of the former Berlin Sugar Museum has found a new home in the Museum of Technology. The Sugar Museum was considered to be the oldest specialized museum on the cultural history of sugar with objects from all areas related to sugar.

Diese Zuckerrohrmühle stammt aus Bolivien und ist über 300 Jahre alt. Sie wurde zur Verkleinerung und zum Pressen von Zuckerrohr verwendet. – Eine große, hölzerne Zuckerrohrmühle. Sie besteht aus einer langen Antriebsstange oben, die eine Antriebswalze zum Rotieren bringt. Diese setzt zwei weitere Walzen in Gang, die das Zuckerrohr auspressen.

Der Führerstand eines Berliner S-Bahn-Triebwagens von 1927 erinnert an die Einführung der Stadt-, Ring- und Vorortbahnen nach dem ersten Weltkrieg. Im Ausstellungsbereich „Drucken von Bildern“ ist die komplette Werkstatt des Steindruckmeisters Dietmar Liebsch zu sehen. Die Steindruckpresse der Fa. Erasmus Sutter aus Berlin (1875) wird regelmäßig vorgeführt. – In einer großen, eisernen Steindruckpresse liegt eine helle polierte Steindruckplatte. In den aufgeklappten braunen Deckel der Presse ist ein weißes Blatt Papier gespannt, das bereits den fertigen Druck des Motivs zeigt.
