The Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin is one of the world's most important museums of graphic arts.
With 110,000 drawings, watercolors, pastels and oil sketches, treasures of exquisite illuminated manuscripts, miniatures and illustrated books as well as over 500,000 prints, the Kupferstichkabinett is one of the most important prints museums in the world. The collections span 1,000 years of art, cultural and media history and range from high medieval codices to contemporary art.
The history of the Kupferstichkabinett dates back to 1652, when the Great Elector acquired around 2,500 drawings and watercolors. However, systematic collecting only began when the museum was actually founded in 1831. Since then, the scope and quality have grown steadily. The collection of early Italian, old German and Dutch drawings by Botticelli, Dürer and Rembrandt, for example, is unique.
There is also nowhere better to study 19th century German graphic art - including the estate of Adolph Menzel. Prints from all eras and schools - with an explicit emphasis on modern and contemporary art from Munch and Kirchner to Picasso and Giacometti to American pop art and more recent contemporary art - are available in excellent quality, number and variety.
