Graciela Iturbide: Eyes to Fly With

C/O Berlin presents the first major retrospective of Graciela Iturbide in Berlin, offering a deep insight into the work of one of Mexico's most important photographers.

Mujer Ángel, Sonora-Wüste, 1979

– Mujer Ángel, Sonora-Wüste, 1979

Developed in close collaboration with the artist (*1942), the exhibition features iconic series as well as previously unpublished photographs, offering an overview of more than five decades of her work. Iturbide documents Mexican culture and highlights the role of women, for example in the Zapotec communities in Juchitán, Oaxaca, where women hold positions of power and stereotypical gender roles are broken down, or in her exploration of Frida Kahlo and her Casa Azul, which shows the artist's life beyond the myth. Other central groups of works are devoted to the indigenous Seri community in northwestern Mexico, the ritual of “La Matanza” in the Mixteca region, and rarely seen photographs from trips to India and Bangladesh. While her work often portrays the people and cultures she has focused on, her poetic sensibility inspires a transcendent perspective that goes beyond mere documentation. The retrospective shows the development of a unique photographic practice whose influence extends far beyond Mexico.

Curated by Sophia Greiff and Melissa Harris.
